Loaches were once ignored by all but fans of “oddities”, but are now getting some much-deserved attention. Many are eel-like in shape and consume all manner of aquarium foods, but there are also algae, snail, and other specialists. Some are shy and nocturnal, but the cold-tolerant Weather Loach becomes quite a responsive pet, swimming into a cupped hand for food and living to age 20+. Striking beauties such as the Red-tailed Black Shark and 12-inch-long Clown Loach are long time aquarium favorites.
