The Mannikins and Munias, also known as the Lonchura genus of finches, are hardy, easy-going little finches from mostly dryer, open areas of Asia and Africa, although a few of them originate from marshy reed habitat. The term “Mannikin” may be used more often to refer to the African species, while the Asian birds are more often called “Munias.” However, these terms can be used interchangeably, so check the scientific name if in doubt about what birds are being discussed.
