Although the word “parakeet” often brings to mind only one species, the Budgerigar, the Australian Parakeets group is a large and diverse collection of colorful hookbill species who specialize in feeding on the seeding heads of wild grasses. These birds, including the Budgie, must be hand-fed or tamed while young to make good pets, and they are unlikely to become very tame if you start working with them in adulthood. However, even the untame birds can become aviary favorites, since they are generally easier to maintain than many other categories of exotic birds.
