The domestic Canary, Serinus canaria domesticus, has been the most popular pet songbird for centuries. The wild ancestor to all of the many varieties available today was a rather plain yellow-green little songbird from the Canary Islands, Serinus canaria, also known as the Atlantic Canary or Island Canary. Although there are several other species of serins who are acknowledged to be fine singers, the talented Atlantic Canary proved to be the perfect combination of a fine singer capable of learning high quality song, a hardy bird easy to care for even with primitive diets, and a free breeder in captivity who could produce many youngsters with these same great qualities.
