I've fostered a few Pugs and they were all calm and sweet. Very obedient dogs that want to please. The pugs would follow me from room to room and stayed next to me all the time so I'd say they make great companion dogs. Easy to house train and a quick shampoo and brushing keeps their coats looking good. I did have one pug that was constantly scratching, but when I started cooking him an egg every morning the itching disappeared within a week. I'd recommend feeding a good quality dog food to avoid skin problems. Other than that, every Pug I've fostered was wonderful with the whole family.
