I got Tonks for my 15th birthday and she is a completely different dog than she was when we brought her home. We brought home this tiny, shaky 8 week old puppy who didn't make a single sound. Now, Tonks is pretty fearless and won't hesitate to bark when she needs something. The most incredible thing I've seen from her is just how smart she is. She's been trained to use a litterbox and knows the names of the people she interacts with most. Even if she doesn't always respond to what you're wanting her to do, she is definitely aware of what you're wanting. The last key thing about my little puppy is how emotionally needy she is. She bonds quick and fast with whoever she is around most and she wants to be on that person's lap 24/7. When that person leaves, she gets very visably distressed. This can be kind of difficult, and makes me feel terrible when I have to leave her during the day for work, but if you're looking for a best friend who will be entirely devoted to you, a Maltese is probably a good bet.
