My roommate and I each had a pet when she moved in and she brought Sam, a 5 year old Maltese. We all lived together in the same condo for two years, along with my 15 year old cat. Sam was the perfect pet: a great companion, lap dog, watch dog. He didn't shed, which was a nice change from my cat. His fur was considered hair, I believe, so there weren't very many people who were allergic to him. He notified us if someone was at the door, even before they rang the doorbell. He was friendly, reliable, and always wanted to be beside you. He loved just lying on the couch on your lap and made you feel like you were his entire world. He got along great with my cat. The cons: when we were at work, he got very lonely and just slept in his room. He really needed a companion dog and my roommate later on got another Maltese to keep him company. Also, when he got excited, he tended to pee a little. We didn't really mind because all of his pros outweighed his cons. This is a fantastic dog that doesn't require much maintenance except grooming - his fur grew long and in his eyes. Also, you have to keep their eyes clean because the mucus is brown and will stain their beautiful white fur.
