Bear was 6 weeks old when my parents brought him home for me at 6 months old. Distinctly, there are several memories that I have of this dog that can completely describe the lab personality. As a toddler, I walked out of my house in the middle of the night and up the road. When my parents came to get me out of bed the next morning, I wasn't there. They found me up the road with Bear right beside me. He had followed me all night protecting me, and in the country, any number of wild animals could have been a threat to me. Another memory I have is when my mother scolded me in the backyard when I was about 5 years old. Bear again protected me by stepping between my mother and me. He was the most protective animal I've every owned. Sadly, his breed suffers from certain incurable cancers and this is what he succumbed to.
