Shih Tzus are ideal family pets or companions for older people. They’re good watch dogs who, despite their size, won’t hesitate to bare their teeth and bark down anyone they perceive to be a threat. We always knew as soon as Sally rushed to the window and started barking like mad that people were approaching and we had to put her into a separate room before we let them in.

Sally was a little high maintenance and needed trimming every couple of months. She was also quite emotional, highly strung and deathly afraid of rain, especially thunderstorms. It wasn’t unusual on rainy days for her to run and hide under the bed, or to find her in the bathroom, trying to scramble into an upturned rubbish bin. Based on our experience, Shih Tzus would ideally be with calm and emotionally stable people who can provide a stable, loving environment and are prepared to invest some time and effort to keep them healthy and happy.
