My first dog as a child was Matty, a gorgeous blond Golden Retriever. He was the perfect family dog and was happiest when he was getting exercise.
On more than one occasion I heard 'Is that dog walking you?' from strangers when we went out :-)
He loved people (especially children), enjoyed the company of other dogs and was extraordinarily sweet. But he wasn't always that way...When Matty was a puppy, he ate a sofa. That's right, a sofa! A new sofa, too. Most of the cushioning and even some of the wood parts. It was wild! Once we trained him, though, he was awesome.
The saddest thing, though, was that he didn't live that long. Only 10 years. I wish he were still here. Heart problems, probably because of his breeding. I miss his smile and his joie de vivre.
