The heartbreak of owning a golden retriever

We brought JJ into our family when she was a puppy, now 13 years ago. The experience has been filled with many wonderful moments of play and hugs, but it hasn't been without an element of heartbreak. JJ has severe hip dysplasia, common for her breed, which has meant expensive medical care, pain for her, and worries for us. Luckily, she has managed to cope without a hip replacement, but the long walks we envisioned with our dog never came to pass.

For anyone looking to buy a golden retriever, I cannot stress enough the importance of first gaining a hip scan from the parents. Alternatively, you could always adopt a retriever mix for all the great aspects of the personality minus the health issues.
