The german shepherd is one of the most well-known breeds in the U.S. They are loyal, protective, intelligent, and great all-around dogs. They don't need much grooming, can be trained for any job (including babysitting), and don't cost much to keep. They can have hip problems. Weighing around 80 lbs, the shepherd does need a good amount of food but not an excessive amount. They are very active, and need both mental and physical stimulation. When raised with cats or other dogs they can be good with both, they can also sometimes be trained to be good. These dogs are beautiful and have wonderful temparments. They can be used as common guard dogs and often bark at a stranger coming to their territory. These dogs can be recommended for any family that will excercise them and train them.
