I mean that, what I titled this. German Sheperds are honestly the best dog for nearly any family. They're great with kids, they're great watch/guard dogs, they are extremely loving and caring.
We had a Sheperd when I was growing up (she ended up acting as a mother to the dog of the post) and during fall when we would rake up the leaves, she would wait in line with us and jump in on her turn! The other dog, Shep, learning from her, found out how much fun it would be to chase us down a hill (while we're sledding) and playfully attack us at the bottom of the hill, effectively pushing us back in the snow and preventing us from getting up. It was always in such a fun manner though, I never saw any harmful or aggressive acts out of any of my Sheperds.
I would, hands down, get this down again, with or without small children. Seriously, they're the best. Shep used to howl along with the fire trucks that would pass by, who wouldn't think that is the coolest thing ever?
