Our English Shepherd, Isaac, loved us as much as we loved him, and was happy just to be in the same room with us. He possessed many contradicting traits. He was a mixture of shy (around visitors to our home) and assertive (when he suspected an intruder). With us, he was always very sweet, loyal, and devoted. Isaac was an amazing watch dog, alerting us to absolutely everything he heard or saw outside by barking like crazy. Inside the house, he was content to sleep quietly (where he could also see his humans) while at the same time remain acutely aware of everything going on around him.
Isaac was bit neurotic and wary of strange people and animals (as his breed was developed to herd, guard, and hunt). He put up with the cats and other dog in the house, but did not really want to be bothered with them.
Highly intelligent, Isaac learned quickly, completing obedience training, AKC Good Citizenship training, and was a certified therapy dog.
Only negatives are a lot of shedding, and not overly sociable.
I would recommend for anyone who wants a dog who makes them feel safe and secure, but is also sweet, loyal, devoted, and a great house dog.
