I believe Doberman Pinschers get a bad rap. I, from experience, believe that these can be some of the most loving dogs. They are a bit hard to control sometimes therefore I would only recommend that they be cared for by adults. They are friendly but very protective.
My most recent Doberman didn't quite start out as my favorite pet. He barked excessively and wasn't well trained. It is a little hard to groom my dobe but not impossible. However, after a time they grow on you. My dog is very responsive and I have never seen him get violent.
If you are a true dog lover I would recommend this breed.
