I shared ownership with my in-laws. They had Desmond about five years before I came into the picture. He was very protective. I was scared of him at first. He barked a lot at strangers, including me for several months. Once I faced my fears and started letting my guard down and petting him, feeding him, etc. he warmed up to me quickly!

He would follow me to bed when I said "I'm going to bed", he could be resting and wake right up and follow me and lay next to me. He became protective of me and very loving. It was a nice surprise! He was very obedient, learned quickly and barked when someone pulled in the drive or walked by; in an alert manner not an annoying way.

When we moved out, about five years later he was still quite affectionate when we visited. I think this breed can be loving and calm if raised that way or vice versa. He loved to run around outside and had A LOT of energy!
