As a child, there was nothing I wanted more than a dog. I was overjoyed when Cookie came bounding out of the laundry room one day when my parents sent me in there for something. She was VERY hyper, and incredibly intelligent. We lived in Miami, so there was plenty of mischief for her to get into. She ate EVERYTHING. Plants, patio furniture, lizards, and frogs were all equally game. My mother didn't like that she tore up the backyard and garden.

I liked that she enjoyed being around me (was NOT aloof, she wanted the attention). Despite being hyper, she was easy enough for me to train. Simple commands were learned and followed with ease. (Though she did scratch me up every once in while out of sheer excitement). Cookie didn't have any health problems while I had her.

Pros: Smart, wants attention, wants to please, high energy level, tolerated children just fine

Cons: too hyper, was destructive when bored

Note: I have an ex boss who fostered Dalmatians. He told me some Dalmatians can have problems with blindness and being deaf.
