A very common thing with Dachshund are that due to their long back they start getting all kinds of joint issues. My dachshund is on a raw food diet and stays at a great weight. He had back issues though last month, which were cured by crating him for about two weeks. His tendency to jump on sofas and overall climbing heights he shouldn´t while I am absent made that happen. If you take care of this early on and watch his diet, you are going to have tons of fun with this true companion. He is a hound though, so if you plan on keeping a neat yard, he is going for little animals, skunks, goofers or mice. He gets a long with the neighbors dogs so well and is just a wonderful family dog.
