I've had three dachshunds, and love them to bits. But, they are not for everyone. If you are looking for a relaxed, sweet dog that you can jog with, please DO NOT get a dachshund.

I'll give you the cons first: they bark, they dig, and they really should never be off-leash because they are independent thinkers who will go where their noses take them. They can be aggressive towards other dogs, and are not the best dogs for small children. Back health can be an issue, and they can be difficult to house train.

The pros: sweet, loyal, excellent watchdog. Usually quite smart (but not always). They love love love to be with their owners. Clownish. Will do ANYTHING for food. Don't need tons of exercise or grooming. FABULOUS companions. Won't break the bank eating (less than a cup per day of dog food per dog)
