We got our current Dachshund as a puppy. He has been a great pet for us for over 8 years. He is willing to play when you want to but more than capable of being the best lap dog when you are relaxing.
His biggest negative attribute is that is is nervous and barks a good bit when someone knocks on the door. That is not bad when it is a stranger but when he sees a familiar face he still barks until they are inside for a few seconds. It could be that his sight is poor and needs to smell the visitor but I think he is mostly nervous. He is not the best with other dogs that are large but is ok with smaller dogs and good with our cat.
One great thing about Dachshunds is the grooming aspect. They shed very little so that saves money & time. Overall I would recommend this breed of dog. I am the main "dog person" in our home so he is attached to me more than anyone so I know the most about him. He is getting on up in age but still gets around very well and has plenty of energy to chase the occasional rogue squirrel in the backyard.
