I've been involved in breeding of shorhair daschund for some time and I can say when they know you and accept you as their leader they will do anything to protect you and love you and be loyal, but training from a puppy age is extremely important cuz they can be nervous and unsocialized and even though they're small they can be dynamite! Either way they're not for small children if they're not trained properly.
They have short hair so you don't have to worry about grooming a lot, and they are perfect hunting dogs so you have to watch out for the chickens, bunnys and such if you have them!...
