Dachshunds are extremely loyal and prefer to be close to their owners. Although small in size, they will bark loudly when someone approaches their home. They are good listeners when commanded, and very submissive. Only mildly active, they prefer to sit or lay near their owner, providing great companionship. There is almost no grooming cost with short haired dachshunds.
However, they are a stubborn breed that require persistence when house training. Owners report the process taking up to a year or more, although I attribute this to having small bladder and being unable to wait extended periods. Often picky eaters, owners may have to search for the right dog food.
Overall, they are a wonderful pet for elderly, adults, and children who have been taught to be kind to animals. Not recommended for families with unruly children or those who travel.
Important: Dachshunds are a lifelong commitment. They do not respond well to a change of owners.
