Dachshunds can be high maintenance

My experience with my long-haired dachshund was not great, but every dog has its pros and cons.

Pros:
The dachshund loved being around people, and was even comfortable with toddlers.
The dachshund was fairly active, but not too demanding of exercise.
Other people love to point out dachshunds as you're walking them, so it's a nice way to meet neighbors.
Besides frequent bathing because of smell, his grooming was extremely low maintenance.

Cons:
Because they are hound dogs, they are very smelly. We had to give our dachshund a bath several times a week, because he would immediately smell.
He loved to bark, and was stubborn, so sometimes he wouldn't stop.
He had many skin and food allergies, which made him very itchy all of the time.
He loved digging in the backyard, which sometimes ruined our garden and also made him very dirty.
He was not very intelligent and could not learn quickly.

Overall, I would not recommend dachshunds as pets.
