Aladdin was an amazing pet. He was great with members of our family, but he was not very kind to strangers (either human or animal.) I would not recommend a dachshund for families with very small children. I have been around three different dachshunds in my life and they have quick tempers, do not like to play too much, and sometimes get a bit nippy. Aladdin loved to play outside, but on his own terms; if he wasn't in the mood, then he would let us know. He was great with his owners and close family though, never once biting us.

Dachshunds tend to be very loud barkers, which is great for protection. Our poor mailman was frightened at first, I remember, but came to love Aladdin and bring him treats. Although the treats didn't make the barking stop!
