My childhood dog was a dachshund. She could be a bit ill-tempered and snappy when I was very young, so she probably wasn't the best dog for a household with young children. As I grew older, that seemed to get better. She was obstinate and didn't follow directions all that well, but she was sweet enough and I missed her when she was gone. Beware of health problems- dachshunds have a completely unnatural body shape. As she grew older she had chronic spine problems; apparently this can be quite severe in dachshunds due to the strain any extra weight creates on their elongated backs.
