A Dachshund is a very loyal and protective dog, though I recommend them for a family that can show them a lot of attention.
In the house training department, I also recommend that you start at a very young age (maybe a couple of months old), and be repetitive. Always make the punishment for going potty in the house the same and be consistent. I just use my voice (low and stern) to let them know they've done wrong - and it works.
As far as child safe, they are family oriented dogs and love to play. Mine loves balls and will play all day fetching and running.
I recommend a Dachshund to anyone though, young or old, they adapt well, though I think they are wonderful around kids once they get use to them.
