These two long haired English Cream Dachshunds were rescued from a Dachshund rescue group after being set for euthanasia by the puppy mill. They were 7 months old when I got them and had been left out on concrete with no human socialization up to that point. As you can imagine, potty training was a challenge, as was getting them wrestled into any kind of shape with obedience. It took about 2 years to get them to understand the basics and by that time, they were the most brilliant dogs imaginable. Jerry was gregarious and confident, rarely barked. Ben was a little more nervous and barked more. Both of them look like golden retrievers with very short legs. They loved to cuddle and were good with kids, dogs and cats. They are playful dogs, but don't need tremendous amounts of exercise - an important factor for people who are busy, or couch potatoes.
Unfortunately, around age 6 - Jerry blew out his spine. $10,000 of surgery, hyperbaric chamber oxygen treatment and therapy didn't help, and so in the end had to put him down. I mention this, because it is a tragic but unfortunately common occurrence for Dachshunds to break their spine.
At 7 years of age, Ben is still doing just fine and is a lovely, companiable dog.
