I adopted my short haired red dapple dachshund, Russ when he was five months old. We have been inseparable for nine years now. In my experience, dachshunds are both loyal companions and protective of their owners and immediate family members. It takes time for many dachshunds to warm up to people, and some prefer to bond with only one person, or just a few. After that bond is formed though, it is one that cannot be broken. Russ was fairly easy to train and does not bark much, but is completely aware of his surroundings and will alert me to the comings and goings of our neighbors. I highly recommend a dachshund if you are an apartment-dweller or otherwise have limited space, but be sure to identify the nearest dog park because almost every dachshund has a great deal of energy and will appreciate daily play.
