I got my dachshund Coco as a puppy, and I will say that she took a bit longer than I expected to train to use the bathroom outside. I was using puppy pads for her for about 6 months more than I did with my lab. Coco is an affectionate, loyal dog who loves to explore when I take her for walks. She is a clean dog, and rarely smells. She barks when strangers come over, but when she realizes it's a friend, she stops. Beware of this breed if you do not want to spend money in the future. 2 years ago, Coco had a disc slip in her back, causing her nerve pain. She hid under the bed and would not come out. $4,000 later, her back was fixed and luckily, she seems to be doing quite well today. There is a risk with this surgery, and some dachshunds do not recover. If I did not have the money, I would have had to put her to sleep. It's hard when you get attached to these adorable animals, and they have a health condition with their backs. This is something to consider when thinking about getting a dachshund. Other than that, they are great animals.
