I got Tara, a little dachshund cross (not sure what with, possibly a terrier of some sort), when I was single and living on my own. She was great company, very sweet and gentle - with me anyway. I was working at home at the time, and on several occasions a client would bring her children, and Tara would quickly hide under the stairs and if the children got too close she would become agitated and snappy. I found out from someone else who had a dog from the same litter that the family we got them from had children who did not treat the puppies very nicely at all. So a few years later when my daughter came along, and Tara showed signs of jealousy towards her, we decided not to take any chances and found her a new place to go.
I'm sure she would have been a lovely family dog if she hadn't been mistreated as a puppy.
