Growing up, we had a few Collies on the farm. We had a litter abandoned and we kept two. Collies are a wonderful breed with young families. They are gentle and even can be protective of the little ones. Collies require little care, just grooming in the summer to keep them cool. Our collies lived outside but they would have done well in a medium to large home. I wouldn't say they would be good as small apartment dogs as they are generally larger in size and pretty active. These dogs have a great temperament and are extremely intelligent, so it makes them easy to train. Overall wonderful breed. The only people I would not recommend them for is elderly as it may be hard to meet their exercise needs and size would be an issue, too as there is a chance they could bump into someone who is frail.
