No dog will ever replace my collie!

I grew up with my collie dog, Beau, and couldn't have dreamed of a better companion during my childhood. He was great around children and adults alike, loyal and protective but never aggressive. We lived near a river and would often go swimming there. Beau loved the water and I always tell people he taught me to swim because I would hold on to his back as he dragged me along!
He was intelligent and playful, and although we never gave him any formal training, he easily picked up all the basic commands. He was a good-tempered and patient dog, but also rather sensitive - he could always tell when a family member was going away and would get sad.

The only slightly unpleasant thing about Beau was that he would sometimes get very smelly, and because his fur was so long and he loved to be in the water and roam around in the woods it would often get matted. We used to cut his fur in the summer so he wouldn't get too hot, but he always seemed to feel embarrassed by this!

I would highly recommend getting a rough collie if you want a great all-around, best friend kind of dog. Just make sure you live somewhere where he or she has plenty of space to roam around and be outdoors.
