True Definition of a Retriever!

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are practically the textbook definition of retrievers. They are fiercely loyal, incredibly smart, and full of energy. Our Chessie, named Zoi, would spend hours running around the yard (we had 2 acres) and loved to swim in the lake -- pretty much any physical activity was right up her alley! But we never had to worry about her running away. Like I said -- fierce loyalty. She was also very protective of our family and our home, which is why I would say they may not be the best around small children and/or small animals. She didn't always get along with our other dog, which was an OE Sheepdog, I think again because of the protectiveness and loyalty to our family. That said, overall she was very well behaved, self sufficient and required very little grooming. More than anything, I would say she was an energetic, happy, intelligent dog. I would definitely recommend a Chessie to an active home, with lots of space for exercise!
