I have a child with special needs, so the most important thing in choosing a pet in my family is whether he will be safe with the pet, and the pet will be safe with him. Our cairn terrier mix is perfect. She is calm and completely gentle. I admit that it's possible that she is not like the rest of her breed, because I am familiar with general breed temperaments and she is much calmer than other dogs like her. But I think the most important thing to know is that a happy, intelligent, well-trained dog can be a good fit in many unexpected circumstances.
