First and foremost, these are dogs originally bred for herding. Therefore, protection runs strongly in their personality. Although generally a calm dog, they are large and dominating and can pose a significant threat to outsiders if not properly socialized from a early age. Owners of this breed should not take their job as leader lightly or this dog will take over the job for you. I would never recommend any kind of training other than positive reinforcement, however it is important to remind the Bouvier who is in charge. They would do best in a home with an experienced dog owner. Don't forget they will need to be groomed often to maintain their coat. They may be a good "hypoallergenic" option for those seeking a mostly shed free dog.
