One of the first dogs I ever taught basic obedience skills to was a Bluetick Coonhound. He was one of my grandpa's best farm dogs. He didn't use him to hunt with, however he did use him as a guard and herd dog.
This was one of my favorite dogs when I was growing up. I played with him a lot and he was very good with me as a kid. He listened well and was very easy to train. He just enjoyed being around people and was an excellent pet.
I don't have any experience hunting with these dogs even though that is what they are most popularly used for. However, I would highly recommend this breed as a pet for children because of my first hand experience. They are not too energetic and they have a calm attitude.
