Beagles are great if you like charm, and not class.

My old dog, Gunner (a Beagle who passed recently) was one of the best dogs I ever had. He was loud, snored, ate food in a weird way, made messes, etc. But he was loving, and would get so excited he would shake when I got home from work. Plus, if you are looking for a decent hunting companion, you cannot get anything better than a Beagle... So long as it behaves.

Very kid friendly, though I never tested him around cats. I knew he liked rabbits, because we would find pieces of them under the porch.
