Charlie was a lovable, but challenging dog. He shed like crazy. The second anyone opened the front door, he ran outside and into the street; sometimes we had to get in the car and drive around the neighborhood for twenty minutes just to find him, and he was reluctant to get back into the house with us. He took a very long time to master potty training, and he jumped on everybody and ended up scratching people pretty badly with his nails a lot. He always had a nervous, frantic energy about him, too. We took him to the vet frequently to treat a variety of illnesses.

I suspect some of Charlie's behavioral patterns can be attributed to the fact that he came from a pretty sketchy pet store. On the bright side, Charlie loved snuggling and always played nicely with kids, other adults, and even our guinea pigs. I think the takeaway here is that Beagles can be affectionate and lovely pets, but it's really important to know before you adopt where your dog comes from and what their needs are.
