The beagle is a playful breed small enough for the apartment dweller, but with more energy than other small dogs, you will want a dog park or other recreational area nearby for daily play. A beagle's instinct is to hunt, so don't be surprised if your beagle brings you small surprises (typically squirrels, rabbits, or other small animals). Beagles tend to naturally bark or even howl, so positive reinforcement for good behavior is a must, and training may be required to eliminate unwanted howling. Overall, a very loving and devoted breed I highly recommend, particularly with children, and especially if you have the space for a dog to run or are close to recreational opportunities for your pup.
