After 20+ years of Dalmatians, I had moved to a neighborhood that didn't allow the necessary space for this breed so I instead adopted a "mutt puppy" for my family, which included twin 7 year olds. I hit the jackpot with "Bendi", a friendly Beagle-mix mutt affectionately known as a Georgia Brown Dog. Her health is excellent, she's fantastic with kids and very emotionally stable. She's a very-alert watchdog as well but, as she's terrified of her own shadow, she makes for a terrible guard dog. Plus, she's only 18" in height. But she makes up for it with playfulness and loyalty. To illustrate her cowardly nature, she once barked at a small growing watermelon in the backyard. She was terrified of it.
