If you are looking for a dog, but have issues with dog hair, allergies or annoying barking, or if you'd like a companion to go hiking and camping with, as a family, the Basenji is for you! Basenjis are short-haired, lean, fast and very intelligent. That being said, they can be a challenge to train since they can be quite defiant. Basenjis are pack animals and enjoy being part of the family. They are cuddlers also and very energetic, and need to be kept active or they may chew or get into things they shouldn't. One of the Basenji's best qualities though, is that they do not bark, but instead communicate through a yodel like sound. They are also known by their curly, pig-like tail and are extremely easy to keep fresh smelling and groomed. Lastly,a guard dog they are not, although they are perfect watchdogs since they will react quickly and silently to let you know of any possible threat. All in all to me, the Basenji is the perfect medium-sized, family pet and loving companion!
