As a young teen, I enjoyed participating in obedience dog shows and wanted a purebred so I could enter a wider range of shows. I read the AKC dog book and thought a basenji would be a great choice because of their short hair. I was also fascinated by the breed's interesting characteristics, such as its barkless vocalizations and supposed high intelligence.
However, once I saved up my money and bought Libby from a breeder, I realized that basenjis are very difficult to train. I eventually gave up on ever showing her. I was also unable to break Libby of bad habits such as biting, running away, and tearing up garbage. I was emotionally attached to her, but by the time she died 14 years later, we were not really sorry to see her go.
