The first dog my parents bought for me was a Basenji. This knee-high African Hound was probably not the best choice for first time dog owner, and a kid at that. Though I shared a great bond with my dog, he was quite aloof toward anyone else, and was not opposed to biting when he felt so inclined. Grooming was easy because of the Basenji's short coat, and they are very quiet due to their lack of a bark (they do make a noise called a chortle), but overall, they are difficult to train and live with, and are really only a good choice for a very committed and experienced dog owner!
