I've had the good fortune to own a number of dogs, but none of them are as unique as the Basenji. I wasn't even aware of this breed until I went to college, but the first time I saw one I was in love. The first thing you'll notice is the 'yodel'. Yes, these dogs don't bark, but they do let out a yodel. For some, that could be a drawback, but I'd rather hear it all day long over a bark. The pig-like tails are particularly unique for a short-haired canine.
The Pros: No barking! Calm, even-keeled, sweet, loyal, family oriented. Clever. Mostly quiet. Most have a beautiful coat.
The Cons: can be aloof, particularly to non-family members. Doesn't need much attention. Better in pairs. Expensive to purchase.
