Sookie is a Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix, whom my wife and I have proudly owned for over 5 years. We got her from a no-kill shelter when she was 6 months old. As a puppy Sookie was playful, curious, energetic and very loving. But, if we had to sum her up in one word, we would have to choose "Smart"!

Training her was one of the easiest things we have ever done. Her natural instinct to work, do, and please her owner make her a perfect dog for us. Whether it was house training, sitting pretty, rolling over, stay, come, go left, or go right, it was almost as if she was pre-programmed to understand everything we wanted her to do.

As a working class dog this breed is NOT, in my opinion, an apartment dog. They are not meant to be left locked up day after day while you work, and enjoy the nightlife. This dog needs to be engaged in some form of work/entertainment on a daily basis to be remain happy and healthy.

This canine bonds tightly, and wants to be part of your everyday life. However, on the rare occasion that she must be left out of the fun, Sookie is fine being left on her own for several hours, and is ecstatic to see you once you return home.

We believe that she embodies all of the good qualities of both breeds, and there are few down sides to either. I find Border Collies to be a bit high strung, and often exhibit neurotic, or obsessive behaviors that I do not care for, but the calmer Australian side seems to balance that trait out. Australians can rather be stoic, and "always on the job", often being aloof to strangers. I think the Border Collie adds a little more friendliness into the mix.

Always up for an adventure Sookie has flown in bush planes in Alaska, she has been on boats, canoes, and even kayaks. She has even been sled riding in the snow! She is a great alert dog to have while hiking in bear country, and she never strays too far away from where you are.

Sookie has beautiful long hair, that sheds quite a bit, so be prepared for a bit of hair maintenance.

If you are looking for a medium sized dog that is loyal, obedient, and most importantly will make you the center of its universe this is a good mix for you.
