The kelpie has been the primary sheepdog which we, and most people I know, have used on their farms. They are extremely excitable, can seemingly run all day, and make the perfect working dog. They work well in both the yards and the paddock, but you need to be careful because they will bite.
They are extremely friendly and social, which means you should keep at least two dogs if you choose the kelpie. They need a lot of freedom, and are not suited to being pets. Be careful around children, because they will snap and bite if bothered, or if they don't understand what is going on.
