Australian cattle dogs are great dogs. However, you have to put in the effort to mold them into safe family dogs. Because they are such great herding dogs they tend to be very nippy and very protective. A lot of vets do not like working with heelers because of this. If you put the effort of training them as pups you can stop those bad behaviors before they start. And keep up the training so that the overprotective nature doesn't show its ugly head. That being said, they are great watch dogs and even better guard dogs. In the warmer months they do shed A LOT so you will need to brush them every day if you can. If you've had dogs before and want to step up your game, Australian cattle dogs will give you the challenge with an amazing reward.
