Those who own akitas know that they are very loyal to their owners and will protect them without hesitation and without being trained. That being said, they are huge dogs and they do need extra training and socialization from the very beginning if you want them to be accepting of other animals and other people and children. Otherwise they need to be trained with pack-like methods and benefit from grooming at least once a week. Akitas blow their coat twice a year and during that time they daily grooming. Otherwise they hardly shed. They are moderate exercise dogs and would do fine in an apartment with proper training and exercise. Finding a good breeder is important for these dogs because you will get the best looks, build and health and temperament and the price is worth it. Overall, once you own an akita and they own you, you can't just stop! They are loyal to their family but need training and socializing with other beings and they have some extra grooming requirements. They are also the national dog of Japan! (the japanese akita at least)
