The phrase “gentle giant” can truly be applied to this breed. My malamute has been the best tempered, easily trained, and most intelligent dog that I have owned. As a puppy, she was very sharp and picked up on her training very quickly. Even now she is eager to learn new tricks and constantly surprises me with her perception.

The only true downside that I can say for her is that due to her size, people tend to misjudge her. She is certainly no lap dog and she basically looks like an over grown wolf. People tend to assume that she is aggressive. I’ve had delivery drivers refuse to deliver packages when they’ve seen her in the yard! But in truth, she is incredibly sweet and loving. She is the furthest thing from an aggressive dog. In fact, the only times that I’ve heard her growl is when she’s felt that her family was in true danger.

Malamutes are also excellent with children. They are very protective and nurturing animals. I would be cautious getting a puppy at the same time as having small children though. My malamute was very awkward as a puppy and often didn’t realize her strength or size until it was too late and someone had been knocked over. Once she grew out of her small puppy phase though, she is very calm and careful around others, even small children.

Overall, the malamute is the perfect breed for me!
