My family adopted an Akita/German Shepherd mix when I was young. She was 2 months old when we got her and stayed with us for 12 years. She was quick to train and did well with a lot of reinforcement, especially at meal time. My younger sister was 5 at the time and the dog was nothing but protective of her. As far a grooming you will need to brush this breed often, for your own sake and theirs. They'll be happier for it and your place will be cleaner if you take care of the hair on your terms and not gravity's. My dog is pictured to the right. Our neighbor's dog (full breed Akita) to the left.
